Byron Bay Writers Festival

Byron Bay Writers Festival started two days ago: whoo, talk about the social/literary whirl! First I need to explain to my American friends what an Australian-style Writers Festival is: not a conference for writers, not a forum for publishers, but more like a PARTY (yay!) for thousands of readers to listen to writers blab on about all sorts of interesting stuff, to ask questions and hang out with them and each other.  Sometimes (as at Byron Bay, where I live) in huge marquees.

Sorry, been too busy to take many photos, promise I'll do better today!  But here's one, at least, of me on stage with three other authors discussing the topic 'Why Women Rock!'

A little piece about my Dad

I wanted to let you know about my first foray into non-fiction. Memoir, I guess, though it's about my father more than me. It's just a short piece, titled Words from Memory. It's just been published in Griffith Review's latest online edition, themed Such is Life, and you can read it here:

And here's the photo at the top of that online article.

It's the very last picture ever taken of my Dad. I'm laughing because he'd just said 'Beautiful!' to the pretty young nurse who took the picture, and blown her a kiss; maybe you can see that his lips are still pursed.  Ever the flirt!  'Beautiful' was the only word he said on that last visit I had with him, but what a corker.

The piece was also broadcast yesterday (August 3), read, yes, by me, on Radio National's First Person program, and as soon as I've figured out the best link to use, I'll post that audio version here.

Anyway ... I'm tremendously chuffed to have this little piece being aired in two such esteemed venues – and Dad, who was a huge Radio National fan, would have been thrilled to the back teeth.

Welcome

Hi there!  Glad you found me!
Come on in – pull up a chair.  Yeah, that one right by my friend here:

That's a tawny frogmouth, a night-hunting member of the nightjar family.  There's a family of them living here on our five acres at Coorabell, in northern New South Wales. I'll tell you more about these endearing birds, and their fabulous red-eye party trick, sometime soon.

The birds and animals who share this beautiful place are one of the topics I'll be blogging on. Hope you like pythons!
